| This unique viola is based upon a model commissioned by renowned British violist Lionel Tertis in the 1930s. Though it was not built by Tertis, the design is still credited largely to him. The original body length was 16.5", while this version has been scaled down to 15.25". The resulting nut-to-bridge distance is 14", easily adapted to by most violinists, and an ergonomic bonus for violists.. The similarity between this viola and it's inspiration ends with the shape of the body. The design was optimized for the addition of the 5th string, an "E", above the "A", thus it becomes a violin and viola combined. The instrument posesses a remarkably focused "cello-like" sonority and is even across the 5 strings. It is powerful, yet still delivers exquisite tone with the lightest touch of the bow. The top plate is Adirondak Red Spruce of medium-spaced grain, while the ribs, back, and neck are figured European Maple. The neck is reinforced with a graphite-epoxy rod under the fingerboard. The first of these fine instruments was comissioned by Carl Woolf, violist with the New England Philharmonic. To quote Mr. Woolf: " The instrument is gorgeous, impressing my conductor and string colleagues at New England Philharmonic not only with it's looks, but also with it's power and tone. I am pleased by how it holds its own as either a strong violin or a strong viola." A quality case is provided with the instrument, due to the unusual shape and size. $6,000.00 USD |
